How carefully and accurately can you make sense of non-fiction text?

When the Apollo 11 astronauts became the first crew to successfully land on the Moon it was front-page news around the globe! Read the article published in the Guardian newspaper on 21st July 1969 and then answer the questions. All the information you need is in the text!

By the end of this activity you will:

  • Have used information contained in non-fiction text to answer questions.
  • Discovered the answers to any questions you got incorrect.
  • Learned how the Apollo 11 mission was reported on in UK newspapers.

To complete this activity you will need:

  • A copy of the newspaper article (you can print this out or view it online).
  • The question sheet (you can print this out or type your answers in the boxes in the PDF file).

Have a go!

  1. Read through the newspaper article carefully. If you find the text hard to read, have a look at the second page - this is the same text but in an easier-to-read font.
  2. Answer the questions on the question sheet.
  3. If you have typed your answers into the PDF file, remember to save your work!
  4. Check your answers - there is a link to the answers in the question sheet.

Tips!

  • Read the questions carefully. After you have written your answer, check the question again. Have you answered it accurately.
  • All the information is in the text. This activity is not testing what you already know about the Apollo 11 mission. You don't need to use books or the web to find the answers.
